I'm a programmer who loves whiskey, and I'm always looking for ways to use the two together. This blog is the culmination of whiskey and code.

Hey there, I’m Alex Kitchens. If you were to peek into my head, you’d find it pre-occupied with family, programming, and whiskey.

I’m no whiskey expert, but I’m a pretty avid whiskey enthusiast (enthused enough to have my own whiskey blog, right?). As I’ve absorbed the whiskey world over the past few years, I found that many whiskey questions were not easy to answer. This blog serves to bridge the gap of knowledge between whiskey experts and whiskey novices by giving a different perspective on learning, tasting, and enjoying whiskeys for those who are newer or uneducated to the topic.

Hard Water, SF - Where I found my whiskey love

In the fall of 2017, I visited my first whiskey bar. At this time, I already had a warming love for whiskey, but I didn’t have much experience aside from the occasional glass whiskey once a month. I flew out to San Francisco for a business trip and went out for drinks at Hard Water.

Hard Water's "Wall of Whiskey" is quite a sight to see.

There I experienced a new perspective of American whiskey. I saw the huge selection of choices, and I first experienced what whiskey truly tastes like when you get past the flavor wall of ethanol. Since then, I’ve been eagerly reading about, buying, and consuming whiskeys. And every chance I get, I find my way back to Hard Water.

As my whiskey obsession grows, so too will this blog. I’m continuously learning how to improve my skills, and this blog will share that journey to greater appreciation of whiskey.

The Purpose of My Whiskey Blog

I’ve talked to a lot of people who say that they “don’t know how to drink whiskey” or don’t know what are “the right whiskeys to drink.” I think that’s where the whiskey community has failed them. There’s no such thing as a “right” way to drink whiskey, and there are no right or wrong whiskeys.

When it comes to finding the right whiskey for you, here’s the one truth: you are the expert of your own tastes. No one knows what flavors and textures you like more than yourself.

My purpose with this blog is to help you find the right way to enjoy whiskey for yourself.

I’d love to hear from you
